The proper intervention with emergency dental care can save your smile. But it may be difficult to determine if what you are experiencing is an emergency. Persistent pain is a sign that something is wrong, especially if you’re unsure why it’s happening or you know you can’t treat the pain yourself. If you experienced an injury to your mouth or teeth through a specific activity, you may also need to see your dentist immediately. Fallen teeth or dental work, also qualify as emergencies — nothing should be falling out of your mouth. As a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, he has been practicing for over 7 years. He is committed to excellence, honesty, and integrity. Any dental injury can turn a regular day into a stressful, painful situation. However, it’s important to stay calm, and remember that your dentist is here to help. Just taking a few deep breaths and assessing the situation will make it easier to make the right decisions in an emergency. If your dental injury or accident has caused bleeding of any kind, apply pressure with a sterile strip of gauze to the afflicted area. Keep the gauze in place until the bleeding stops, or until you reach our office.
Over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help to temporarily alleviate any pain or swelling you may be experiencing. However, it’s important to avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin, as they inhibit clotting and make it difficult to control the flow of blood. In addition to medication, you can also relieve pain with a cold compress by applying an ice pack to the cheek or lip near the affected area.
