What Are Dentures and How Do They Work?

Dentures are a restorative dental treatment for lost teeth and mitigating jaw bone loss. The treatment utilizes removable dental devices that consist of a base that mimics your gum's natural color and artificial teeth to replace your missing teeth. The dentures lay on top of your mouth, supported by your gum tissue and held in place by saliva.

The Benefits of Dentures

Restored Functionality for Eating and Speaking

By replacing the missing teeth, dentures ensure that you can enjoy meals and engage in conversations without hindrance.

Prevention of Jaw Bone Deterioration

When teeth are missing, the jaw bone lacks the necessary stimulation for growth and begins to deteriorate. This excessive loss of jaw bone can lead to further tooth loss, speech difficulties, and even changes in facial appearance. Dentures provide the necessary pressure to the jaw bone, preserving its strength and structure.

Low Maintenance

Maintaining dentures is as simple as removing them and gently brushing them with a soft-bristled brush. This easy upkeep allows patients to enjoy the benefits of dentures without the hassle of extensive maintenance routines.

The Denture Treatment Process

Consultation and Examination

During the consultation stage, our Hendersonville dentist will examine the condition of your gums, remaining teeth and oral cavity to determine your suitability for dentures. After examination, he’ll explain the denture process and ask you whether you have any questions, concerns, or overall expectations.

Taking Impressions and Bite Registration

The second step involves using a putty-like material or a digital scanner to take impressions of your teeth. Dr. Corey Truman will then send these impressions to a lab to fabricate your custom dentures. Aside from taking impressions, he’ll register your bite using bite rims to ensure your dentures are properly aligned.

Wax Try-in and Denture Fabrication

Dr. Truman will create a wax model of the dentures you’ll wear temporarily while awaiting the actual ones. These wax dentures also allow him to check the fit and comfort of the dentures, and make adjustments if necessary. The wax model will form a template for your actual dentures, which will be ready in one and a half to three months.

Denture Placement and Oral care Instructions

Once your dentures arrive, Dr. Corey Truman will schedule a fitting appointment. He’ll place the dentures on your mouth, checking how they fit and whether you’re comfortable with them. If everything checks out, Dr. Corey Truman will give you instructions on how to take care of your dentures and maintain proper oral hygiene.
