Are Dental Implants Permanent?

Dental implants are a fantastic choice to restore the smile of anyone dealing with missing teeth. If you've been exploring your options for tooth implants, you likely have many questions and want to know how long they last.

Keep reading this short article to learn how dental implants work and whether they're permanent. We'll delve into the durability of dental implants, explaining the materials used, the implantation process, and the impressive success rates. Understanding the longevity of dental implants can help you make an informed decision about your tooth replacement options, ensuring a smile that stands the test of time.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth that mimic the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. They’re made from three elements: a metal post, an abutment, and a dental crown.

Here’s a short overview of the process:

  • First, you’ll meet with a dentist to find out if you’re a good candidate for implants
  • If you have healthy bones and gums and meet the other requirements, you’ll be scheduled for surgery
  • The metal post is inserted into the jaw bone, after which the body begins to heal
  • For the next six months or so, the bone and gums will fuse to the implant in a process known as osseointegration
  • Once completed, the dentist adds the abutment and gets an impression to make the crown
  • Around 2 weeks later, depending on how fast the lab works, the dental crown is attached over the abutment, and the procedure is complete

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements. The metal post can last a lifetime and only needs replacing under extreme circumstances, such as trauma to the jaw, which damages the post, or an infection that affects the bone or gums.

Similarly, the abutment is also rarely damaged since it’s protected by the dental crown.

The dental crown is another story. It’s the most vulnerable part of the implant and is subjected to wear and tear. Even so, patients can keep their original crowns for decades, sometimes as long as 20 years or more with the right care.

Can My Dental Implant Get a Cavity?

Cavities form when harmful bacteria in the mouth feed on food particles left after meals and release acids that break down tooth enamel.

Dental implants aren’t affected by this process, so they will not develop cavities. Even so, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to focus on oral hygiene. Dental damage like cavities or gum disease can also affect your implant and reduce its lifespan.

Apart from daily brushing and flossing, you should also see the dentist routinely for professional cleanings and to monitor your implant. This can help extend the lifespan of your implant.
